In 1989 he began work as arts editor for the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad and became literary editor in 1997. In a weekly column, Steinz propagates the pleasures of reading the classics, from Homer to Houellebecq.	His 'bookwebs' have been reproduced in four reading guides: Reading &cetera ('Lezen &cetera'), Reading on Location ('Lezen op locatie'), All Books Wish They Were Music ('Elk boek wil muziek zijn'), and The Worldwide Web of World Literature ('Het web van de wereldliteratuur.
